Jealousy

Jealousy- Gabriela Abalo

This poem depicts Othello’s state of mind within the play. His jealousy, in addition with the poison fed to him by Iago, is the “awful advisor”, which prompted him to doubt his wife and conduct atrocities against those around him. This “awful advisor” led to the relationship between Othello and Cassio to deteriorate and eventually lead to disputes between Othello and his wife.

“That leaves you by yourself Heartbroken and grieving” can be correlated to the period of time in which Othello was contemplating about the fabricated affair between Desdemona and Cassio. In the play, Othello had a period of time when he tried to deny the fact that Desdemona and Cassio were having an affair, but eventually submitted to human nature. After this period of time Othello began to brew hatred and mistrust, for Cassio and for Desdemona. By doing this he played right into Iago’s hands and was then able to be fed more lies and eventually gave in to the hatred swelling up within him.

“For what was not For what was lost For what it really was” depicts the aftermath of Othello’s rage. “For what was not”, referring to how he wrongly doubted Desdemona, and how it was all a lie. “For what was lost”, heartbroken and grieving for the wrongdoings he committed and the killing of his wife, prompting to Othello killing himself out of sadness. “For what it really was…”, this line is quite self-explanatory. It really was, in the bitter end, just jealousy.
