Graduating CASC minors speak!

In reflecting on my CASC education, the first thing that comes to mind is a quote from Geneva Gay’s book on culturally responsive teaching, which I am currently reading: “…ethnic literacy, reflective self-analysis, decision making, and social activism… are as essential for living in a culturally and ethnically pluralistic society as are knowing how to read and having a salable skill…” (p. 36). The skills, processes, and ways of being that I’ve learned in my CASC courses feel essential and necessary. My CASC courses assisted me in making sense of my positionality and role(s) in this world, and showed me how to bring justice and equity into everything I study and do. My Service-Learning experiences allowed me to expand outside of the Dominican community and learn from people and communities I would not have otherwise been connected to. As a result of the CASC minor, I have a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning through social change, and I could not be more grateful for this.

Mia Nguyen, Psychology /CASC minor ‘21: The CASC minor has been a vital part of my education at Dominican. I’ve been able to apply theory to practice not only from what I’ve learned in CASC classes but in my major Psychology courses as well. The minor has also provided me with community connections to better network and serve my community in the future. I now have a true understanding of what it is like to serve my community in the field and through research in academia.
