Why You Need To Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

For the past few days, I’ve just felt a bit… meh. It’s not been particularly bad, but I’ve not felt great either.

If you’re anything like me, maybe you start to get a bit agitated and worried.

Maybe you start questioning everything, like:

“What’s wrong?”
“Why am I not excited?”
“Everything is totally cool — WHAT THE FUCK MAN.”

And being the brilliant servant it is, your brain starts to find reasons:

“Because you’re boring.”
“Because you’re not doing enough.”
“Because-insert-some-other-self-defeating-horrible-reason-here”

So, you feel bad for a while.

But after you’ve had enough of bathing in the murky waters of self pity, you decide you need to find a solution.

So your brain’s like: “Hey, I have an idea. Maybe you need to do something new.

Maybe you should start a new work project.
Or perhaps you could set a new goal in the gym.
Actually, you need to read 500 books this month.

Yeah, that’s it. Mmm. This feels good.”

Suddenly, it’s like you can breathe again. Because that feeling of chasing something new that you desperately crave, is back. You’ve found your next high, and it’s awesome.

How do I know? Because I am you.

The problem is, as any junkie will tell you, it’s only temporary. And there’s also a much more serious problem at play:

By constantly chasing new shiny things, you end up achieving very little.

It’s sneaky, because it doesn’t feel that way when you’re so preoccupied with planning and being excited. And that’s why it’s such an easy trap to fall into.

But we do it, because we’re afraid of the next phase. It’s harder there because it’s not new or sexy anymore, and we know we’re about to get seriously challenged on many levels.

Not only that, but you’re acutely aware that your goal is so out of reach, that the temptation to give in is almost unbearable.

Which is why, most people do.

BUT.

If you can get through that sticky, uncomfortable phase — you’re 1 in a million.

Seriously. Do you understand how big a deal that is?

I mean, I don’t know the stats. But it’s gotta be something like that, because it’s just so god damn rare. You don’t have to look very far to see how many people let go of their ambitions in the name of discomfort.

So see it for what it is. Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

There’s nothing wrong with you, it’s just that feeling ‘bla’ is part of the process.

(It’s also why what I call “happiness porn” that infiltrates our culture, is stupid.)

You got this.
