Ethernet in a Few Years

When thinking about new technology from the future, it is very hard to predict what will happen or what will even be made. Who would have thought that the smartphone would be made and be revolutionary. New technology has changed our world. This could be said about a lot of things but one thing that stayed around is Ethernet. Ethernet has been at since 1973 and it has just been getting better and better. Usually a new standard would come around and take over, but Ethernet is still being used today. Ethernet will continue to evolve and be used by everyone. I predict that we are still going to be using Ethernet for the next 10 years.

I believe that the everyone around the world is still going to be Ethernet because of how long it has already last. Most technology lasts around 5–7 years before a new one comes out. But as we see for Ethernet it has technically stayed the same from the start, just upgrades in speed. To see a technology last thing long could mean that Ethernet could even last more with more upgrades to it’s speed to keep up with what’s required. As of right now the fastest Ethernet cable is Cat 7, which goes up to 10 Gb/s. That is pretty fast as Cat 5 only goes 1000 Mbp/s. The Cat 7 is already fast enough today and not much people need it to be that fast. If Ethernet continues to grow into faster Gb/s in the upcoming years, I still see Ethernet being a standard for everyone.

Another reason is that it’s not that easy predicting what can come. Who would have predicted that the Ethernet cable will still be used in the next 40 years. If this question was asked a few years after the Ethernet cable was invented, who would have guessed that it will still be used in the 21st Century? The safest thing to say is that Ethernet will still be here for more years to come. Also if we look at other new cables like the fiber optic cables, it’ll be hard to say that fiber optic will one day take over Ethernet. Fiber optic right now is very costly compared to what you can get by just getting an Ethernet cable. Yes it is faster, but how much people need that fast of speeds in their home for just daily use. Even with new technology that comes out, Ethernet will still be used as a standard.

In conclusion, Ethernet has lasted for more than 40 years and it will still continue to be used in the upcoming years. With it lasting this long, it is known throughout the world that this is what almost everyone uses. It can be hard replacing something that can be upgraded upon and what everyone knows today.
