5 Tips for Rocking Social Media

I chose these five because they have really resonated with me and have been effective within my social media programs. They have also allowed me to maximize my efforts with the time I have budgeted. Yes, there are algorithms, timing and many things to balance ( think juggling act), but there are a few easy and simple steps you can take today to start seeing a difference.

Lisa Buyer and David Meerman Scott both write about getting to know your buyer personas and it’s definitely a must do. This step takes a bit more work, but in the long run it will really connect you to the right people. It’s not just about how many followers you have, it’s about having the right followers for your business or brand goals. It’s difficult to create great content, if you have no idea who it is for. Yes, you can blindly throw a lot of content out into the world and hope something sticks, but the more time and result effective method is to get to know your audience.

Content really is king. Once you know your audience, it’s time to create! Remember to get visual and make is shareable. You want people to share your content and spread the word. If it’s not worth sharing, why are you creating it? Great content has staying power and is really the soul of your brand voice.

Pinterest has surprised me, like so many others, as a power house for social. I set up a page for my nonprofit, but had never really looked at it. I would occasionally post things, but didn’t dedicate much time or energy to it. In taking a deeper look, I have come to realize how great of a tool it really is. There are 100 million daily users and businesses are not really taking advantage of its features. This means its a great place to get your message, large or small, out there. I have discovered that our audience is there, so we need to be there. I am currently spending about an hour a week on Pinterest and have already seen increased web traffic and shares.

Scheduling has been a life saver. I jump on Buffer on Sunday and schedule for the week. I research key events, holidays and dates, so I can schedule specialized posts to align our message. I can also schedule out for the month, which leaves more room for commenting, retweeting and engagement. This has become my go to tool!

There are so many best practices, ideal times, sizes and protocols, but don’t forget to be creative. Be you and be unique. Don’t post, just to post, share your story and make your voice heard. It’s easy to get bogged down with all the rules, but don’t forget that creativity is crucial. “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” Very wise words from Maya Angelou.
