Which restaurants are worst for your heart?

It probably comes as no surprise that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. How often do you see a cheap, quick fast food establishment as you drive throughout town or walk throughout your city? In many communities, the answer will be: almost constantly.

You can’t have a conversation about obesity without mentioning McDonald’s. But it turns out McDonald’s is far from the worst restaurant for your health. Chain restaurants, of which there are dizzying amounts throughout the US, are the biggest culprits.

A breakfast burrito at the Cheesecake Factory contains 2,730 calories, which is 730 above the recommended daily limit of 2,000 calories. And this is just one meal. This monstrous burrito also contains two days’ worth of sodium and 3 days’ worth of saturated fat. In order to match the damage to your heart done by this burrito, you’d need to eat 7 Sausage McMuffins at your next trip to the golden arches.

The Cheesecake Factory’s new pizza, loaded with with toppings, is just as bad as 4 pieces of Popeye’s chicken and 4 biscuits. But Cheesecake Factory isn’t the only chain restaurant serving up dangerous delights.

Chili’s Honey-Chipotle Crispers & Waffles is the same as eating five Krispy Kreme doughnuts with 30 McNuggets and five packets sauce. Red Lobster’s Create-Your-Own-Shrimp-Combo is the same as an entire eight-piece bucket of KFC fried chicken, four mashed potatoes with gravy, four pieces of corn, and eight packets of butter.

Research from the Stanford Graduate School of Business found that Starbucks customers in New York City ordered items with 6% fewer calories when the calorie amounts were displayed. This suggests that when people know exactly what they are eating, they may make healthier choices.

It is not difficult to exceed the daily calorie limit in just one meal when eating out. But perhaps in the fight against the obesity epidemic, knowing is half the battle.
