A VPN that speeds you up? WARP and Wireguard

VPNs have been used for ages by students to connect to universities, employees to workplaces, and of course, for regular folk to bypass geo-restrictions and firewalls. All along, almost all configurations and services used some form of OpenVPN’s code to make it all work together. It established the protocol and made sure everything could talk to each other.

Now, there’s a new kid on the block and it’s leaner and faster. Also free and opensource, Wireguard is a new protocol written in just about 4000 lines of code- about 1% of OpenVPN’s. It is based on UDP and supports IPv6 for futureproofing.

The real kicker is just how much faster it is in terms of establishing a connection, and really, for that it must be tried. Whilst it still has not entered the mainstream completely, a number of providers inluding NordVPN use it with their own proprietary software (“NordLynx” in this case) but a fantastic free way to get your hands on this is Cloudflare’s WARP service.

It does not change your public IP address. However, it does encrypt your traffic and route it via Cloudflare DNS. As a result, you can enjoy your local content (or conversely, you cannot bypass geo-restrictions), but you can overcome local firewalls and domestic restrictions.
