Day 18 March Madness Challenge

An item from your childhood you’ve kept and what it means to you

I have photos of myself when I was a tiny one. Okay, I was never tiny. I weighed 10 pounds 2 ounces when I was born. So, photos from when I was very young.

There are no toys and such from those days. I did have a doll I think was called a Betsy Wetsy until a couple years ago. I gave that to my granddaughter.

So the only other thing I have is my brother’s quilt that Mom made him when he was a baby. It was a patchwork quilt she made from sewing scraps. It is 66 years old now and quite tattered. I keep it and never let anyone use it. It is the only connection to him I have.

He was born profoundly retarded and never progressed past the mentality of a three-month-old. I had a special bond with him, as I could calm him when no one else could. In a way, it was like having a brother and being the only child at the same time. I had no one to play with, but he was still my brother.

He died of pneumonia when he was in his 20s. No one but family or friends of Mom’s and Dad’s would have come to his funeral, and there were only a few of the family that came because a hurricane had been through and destroyed the funeral home. The staff was great and made the best accommodations possible under the circumstances.

I had no other siblings. So, this worn old quilt is my connection to the brother I still miss.
