Becky G

Becky G is a Mexican American singer, actress and spokesmodel who began her entertainment career at the age of nine.

California native Becky G found fame singing songs like “Shower” before moving onto Spanish-language hits such as “Sin Pijama” and “Mayores.” Her music incorporates rap, pop hooks, reggaeton and Latin influences. In 2013, she signed on as a representative for the beauty line CoverGirl. Becky has guest starred on the television show Empire and was one of the leads in 2017's big-screen Power Rangers adaptation. She began her career at nine years old, following a financial setback that meant her family had to move into her grandparents’ garage. All four of Becky’s grandparents left Mexico to come to the United States, and she has talked about how their courage and hard work led to more opportunities for their granddaughter.

Becky G was born as Rebbeca Marie Gomez on March 2, 1997, in Inglewood, California. Becky’s parents, Alex and Frank, were high school sweethearts who met at Santa Monica High School. They had Becky, her brothers Frankie and Alex, and Becky’s younger sister Stephanie. Becky’s grandparents emigrated from Mexico. She’s part of the second generation of her family to be born in the United States.

After the family lost their home due to a ballooning mortgage payment and went to live in a small converted garage, a nine-year-old Becky decided to start a career in entertainment to bolster her family’s finances. She looked for child talent agencies, found an agent and began getting work in commercials, voiceovers and modeling. Becky has attributed being part of a large extended family with giving her the attention-getting skills that helped her achieve entertainment success.

Becky was writing her own music at age 11 and learned to play the guitar at 13. Her cover of Kanye West and Jay Z’s “Otis,” one of several cover videos she posted on YouTube, caught the eye of producer Dr. Luke. In 2011, she signed with his Kemosabe/RCA Records. Her EP, Play It Again, came out in 2013.

Some of the artists Becky has collaborated with include will.i.am and Pitbull (their “Can’t Get Enough” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Latin Rhythmic Airplay chart); she has writing credits on Cody Simpson’s “Wish You Were Here” and Cher Lloyd’s “Oath.” In addition, she’s toured with singers such as Katy Perry, Demi Lovato and Fifth Harmony.
