When the time is right

Seasons can be difficult or easy, barren or fruitful, but they are all unavoidable. Often we don’t realize when we are on the brink of a shift, unaware of what is coming next. Some seasons in life are recognizable because the view is exhilarating or the weight of the deep is crushing. These times of life can be challenging to anticipate, unlike the weather. We can prepare ourselves for changes in the weather, even without realizing it. As the summer days begin to shorten and our evenings are cooler, we get ready by pulling out our sweaters and digging our coats out from under the bed or the back of the closet.

In our home, usually near Mother’s Day, we spend a few days working hard planting flowers and preparing our vegetable garden. It’s a tradition, a routine, something we have come to expect each year. As our boys get older, they have become more involved in the ritual by helping spread mulch, tilling the soil, weeding the beds, and watering the plants. It’s encouraging and (usually) helpful to have them involved in the process, participating in the rhythm of our life together. It’s one thing for them to be excited about eating fresh strawberries or picking cherry tomatoes while they play in the backyard, but quite another to put in the work of amending the soil, keeping the beds free of weeds, and fully watered. They are beginning to see the connection and more willing to do the necessary work each year.
