Cyber Security Predictions of 2020

Last year was an eventful year with regards to Cyber Security. What will 2020 bring? Many cyber security predictions for 2020 have been made by industry-leading experts. Analysing all these predictions gives a good picture of the most likely trends. Here are the top 6:

Artificial Intelligence has been a trend (or hype, depending on who’d you ask) for a couple of years now. Most of the predictions made by security experts also include AI-powered attacks and defense.

One way the experts see AI used in cyberattacks is to integrate it into malware programs to mutate, bypass and infiltrate systems and servers alike. Similarly, AI could also help automate mundane tasks and improve scalability and effectivity of attacks (e.g. spear phishing).

The other side of the coin, the blue team, will also use AI and ML to augment existing solutions for monitoring and for fending off attacks. Although the systems using AI can also be targeted and poisoned to force it into wrong decisions to the benefit of the attacker.

A popular target for ransomware in 2019 was the health sector. While many experts believe this trend will continue, it won’t be limited to this sector. Many other industries will also fall victim to ransomware. A reason for this prediction is that over the course of last year, more and more insurances have covered the expenses made to recover from ransomware, including paying off the actual ransom.

Another reason why ransomware will likely increase in 2020 is that they are becoming more sophisticated and can evade even the most advanced type of email security solution (see AI-powered attacks).

While deepfakes are not a new phenomenon, it saw a steep increase in 2019 and will continue to evolve exponentially in 2020. With more edge computing becoming available with the introduction of 5G, deepfake attacks will skyrocket in this new year. New mobile phones will get more computing power. The maturing deepfake deep web marketplace will offer deepfake technology on a massive scale for a very low price. This will…
