Should You Work at an Hourly Wage or Commission for Your Side Hustle?

When it comes to side hustle jobs, people get really excited over the prospect of making additional income – and rightfully so. But with all the different types of jobs and payment out there, which one is right for you?

Side hustles, for the most part, have two different kinds of delivery methods: hourly rate and commission.

What I’ve learned with trying to make income on the side is that an hourly rate is safe: you know exactly how much you’ll make every time you work. The downside is that the only way to make more money is to work more hours, no matter how hard you work during those hours.

The reason commission is appealing to so many people is because you can have a system set up by working a lot up front. The term ‘passive income’ is a type of commission, and is a result of the strategy and effort you put into it.

What’s interesting is that although some people really make a killing off of commission, most people tend to enjoy making commission for a side job even though they often make less than they would on an hourly wage. The prospect of making more money is appealing to them, even though they may never realize that potential.

What I’ve learned is that people who make more money than most never give up. Platforms like Medium, YouTube, and TikTok can be great sources of income — but they require a lot of hard, consistent work, and passionate content that people will enjoy consuming.

So, if you decided to make side income by creating content, the way you’ll make the most money is by continuing to create content after you feel like it’s a dead end and you want to give up.
